My son's preschool class just did a whole unit on that very painting.
The kids had to write stories based on what they saw in it.
Wow, how cool (and how germane). This painting has always really appealed to me, but it's resisted my repeated attempts to articulate just what it is I like about it so much. It just commands attention, and I could stare at it for five minutes and enjoy it as much at the end as at the beginning.
Anyway, it sure would be fun to be able to read one or some of those stories from the kids. Would your son be up for permitting you to post some of his reaction to it here?
