Wisdom Comes in Threes

“If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.”
--the artist Marc Chagall

“I can’t write without a reader. It’s precisely like a kiss—you can’t do it alone.”
--the late author John Cheever

“I think one’s art goes as far and as deep as one’s love goes.”
--painter Andrew Wyeth

A teenager I know is just back from a statewide writing competition. I have mixed feeling on those judging situations ... admittedly highly competitive and frantic (frenetic? fanatical?)? Do they accidentally zap or discourage (temporarily? permanently?) a young mind. What I saw today reminded me how important to balance pro and con with critiquing. There will always be writing that isn't appreciated till long after...And the quick appreciation that slips away fast. A kiss? A bad day as a writer is kind of like getting a sliver of glass between the teeth instead...
