Latest Media Column
Here is the new media column, a collection of impressions from the Society of Professional Journalists' convention I attended in Chicago a couple weeks ago. I'll try to post some additional thoughts soon.
A weblog devoted to spurring a conversation among those who use words to varying degrees in their daily work. Hosted by John Ettorre, a Cleveland-based writer and editor. Any SPJ conference buzz about Ms. Couric anchoring CBS evening news?
Did you watch her debut last night?
Maybe print journalists should get agents...Katie has certainly done well.
No, Anne, I can't say that Couric was much of a subject there. In fact, TV in general wasn't, probably because as a medium for serious journalism, it's largely collapsed in recent years. That was true of local TV a long time ago, but more recently also true for the networks. Other than Frontline and a few other bright spots at PBS, things aren't so great.
As for Katie's debut, I did intend to watch (mostly for the sheer spectacle of it) but I ultimately missed it. I did enjoy the print coverage the next day, though. I thought the Washington Post's Tom Shales was especially interesting. His article is here:

Thanks for the link. I didn't see the debut either and it appears I didn't miss much. A picture of Suri Cruise, yikes.
Yikes, indeed. I especially love how she/they are asking the audience to choose a sign-off message. Pathetic.
