A Reminder that Love Knows No Age

A tragic story from England: A woman in her 90s is left by her younger lover. "I have never felt more devastated," she writes. "If anyone had told me that a woman in her 90s could feel this depth of loss, I would not have believed them." Readers of The Guardian newspaper provide some sympathy.

Hmmm...all kinds of thoughts are running through my head. Let's all raise our orange juice glasses, or coffee mugs this a.m. and toast this woman for still having the capability of rockin' on in her 90's. I think she's my new heroine.

TJ,
Thanks for that wonderful riff. You no doubt rambled because, like me, you were so deeply touched by her pain, and especially by the way she articulated it. I think we all assume that people in that age group suffer from this and other similar kinds of hurt, but we're mostly used to thinking of that elderly suffering as happening in silence. I'm glad she broke her silence. It made me and others think about our own actions, and also opened the floodgates for others to publicly sympathize with her. While that doesn't solve her problem, it may help a bit.

I especially love your story about taking the man food. One of the chief reasons why I think we hit it off so well after meeting at a journalism conference a couple years ago is because we perhaps sensed likeminded souls in each other (I know I did in you). I know I've received more than my share of teasing about how I bond with subjects of my writing, and stay in touch with them, sometimes for many years, with some even converting into friends. I think that's one of the many joys of writing, and writers who take a more clinical, detached view of their subjects are missing some joy, as well as bringing less of their heart to the work than they might. It generally shows in the work. Anyway, thanks for adding so wonderfully to this thread.

That's quite a colorful career of abuse and intimidation directed at you. Given all of that, one would assume you're an old guy, but you're not.
